APPOINTMENT OF HONORARY STAFF
1. The Council may appoint Honorary Professors, Honorary Departmental Fellows, and Honorary Lecturers of the University.
Honorary Professors
2. Conditions governing appointment of Honorary Professors:
2.1 The appointment shall be for a period of up to five years in the first instance with a possibility of re-appointment for similar periods.
2.2 Persons nominated for appointment as Honorary Professors should normally be distinguished scholars external to the University and not former members of the
University's staff.
2.3 Each proposal shall contain a curriculum vitae of the person recommended for appointment and a clear statement of the expected involvement of the person in the
work of the Department and the University.
2.4 The proposal, including supporting papers (see para. 2.3 above) shall be considered by an Appointing Committee, made up as follows:
The Vice-Chancellor(as Chair)
The Pro Vice-Chancellors
The Deans
Two members of Council who are not members of staff of the University
2.5 The Appointing Committee is not required to meet in person and may conduct its business by correspondence.
2.6 The Appointing Committee has delegated powers from the Council. The decision of the Appointing Committee will be reported to the Staffing Committee and
then to Council.
Honorary Departmental Fellows
3. Conditions governing appointment of Honorary Departmental Fellows:
3.1 The title will be granted by the Council on the recommendation of the Staffing Committee.
2.2 The scheme encourages liaison with research establishments, industry and the arts. Honorary Fellows are invited to visit the Department concerned to advise on
research projects and to lecture in their particular fields of interest.
3.3 Nominations from departments are normally considered once a year by the Staffing Committee at its October meeting, for subsequent onward submission to the
Senate and Council in the case of favourable recommendations. Nominations should be accompanied by a full curriculum vitae and a clear statement of the
expected involvement of the person in the work of the Department and the University.
3.4
The appointment will be for three years in the first instance with the possibility of re-appointment for similar periods.
3.5 No stipend is attached to the appointment but expenses reimbursed by the Department in which the appointment is held at approved University rates.
Honorary Lecturer
4. Conditions governing appointment of Honorary Lecturers:
4.1 The title will be granted by the Council on the recommendation of the Staffing Committee.
4.2 The title shall be used to give recognition and status to individuals who make a substantial contribution on a regular basis to the academic work of the institution
and who do not receive any remuneration from the institution for this work.
4.3 Retired members of the academic staff, other than holders of Chairs, who continue to make a substantial contribution to the academic work of a department, shall
be eligible for the award of this title, as shall individuals who are employed by other organisations and who contribute substantially and regularly to the work of the
University without receiving remuneration from the University.
4.4 Recommendations from departments for the granting of this title shall be given initial consideration by the Staffing Committee for onward transmission to the
Senate and Council in the case of favourable recommendations.
4.5 The title shall normally be awarded for a fixed term of five years, and may be renewed for a further term.
4.6 No stipend is attached to the appointment but expenses reimbursed by the department in which the appointment is held at approved university rates.
