CONFERMENT OF TITLE OF RESEARCH PROFESSOR AND EMERITUS PROFESSOR, EMERITUS READER AND EMERITUS LECTURER

1.  The Council may confer the title of :

2.  Research Professor in accordance with section 4 below and;

3.  Emeritus Professor, Emeritus Reader or Emeritus Lecturer of the University to staff on retirement from the University in accordance with section 5 below.

Conferment of the Title Research Professor

4.      Conditions governing appointment of Research Professor:

4.1   The title will be granted by the Council on the recommendation of the Senate.

4.2   Eligibility shall be restricted to former members of the academic staff of  the University who have previously held the title of “Professor” and who are re- engaged as part-time members of the academic staff of the University.

4.3    Persons who have held the titles of Honorary Professor or Professor Emeritus shall  not be eligible for the award of the title Research Professor.

4.4    A Research Professor is expected to take an active role in the research activities of a  Department or Departments and will not normally be engaged in  teaching or administration.

4.5    Persons who have held the title of Research Professor, on relinquishing such title,  may be eligible for conferment of the title of Professor Emeritus subject to the usual conditions (see 5 below).

 
Conferment of the Title of Emeritus Professor, Emeritus Reader and Emeritus Lecturer

5.      Conditions governing appointment of Emeritus Professor, Emeritus Reader and Emeritus Lecturer:

5.1    The title will be conferred by the Council on the recommendation of the Professional  Development and Staffing Committee.

5.2    Eligibility shall be restricted to Professors, Readers and Lecturers who have retired from work in the University. A person who, on retirement from the University, takes up employment elsewhere, is not eligible for the conferment of  the title of Emeritus Professor, Emeritus Reader or Emeritus Lecturer.

5.3    The title shall not carry with it any stipend or duties or employment status.
