Ordinance 26

1.  Eligibility

1.1    The University may confer the title of Professor or Reader on an employee of  the University who is a member of its academic staff.

2.  Criteria for Readerships and Personal Chairs

2.1     Candidates for promotion to Readership must demonstrate exceptional performance in either research or teaching/student experience or leadership/administration. In order for a Readership to be conferred, the applicant must demonstrate that they meet the published criteria for Readers which will be reviewed annually to ensure that they continue to reflect the University’s expectations.

2.2  Candidates for promotion to Personal Chairs must demonstrate exceptional performance in either research or teaching /student experience or leadership/administration. In order for a Personal Chair to be conferred  the applicant must demonstrate that they meet the published criteria which will be reviwed annually to ensure that they continue to reflect the University’s expectations.
        
3.  Appointment Procedure

3.1    The University will invite staff  to indicate their intention to submit an application once  a year in accordance with a timetable published annually.  A mentor will be assigned to  work with the applicant who will submit their application in accordance with the  published timetable.
 
3.2   Applicants should provide the names of  two external referees.

3.3     The Vice-Chancellor shall seek from the Head of Department and the applicant will  decide on the names of at least six external assessors expert in the discipline  concerned.  The Vice-Chancellor shall select at least four whose opinions  on  the applicant’s case for promotion will be sought.

3.4     The Promotions panel will consider all applications received in accordance with a recruitment and selection process which is determined  by the University’s Executive on an annual basis. 
 
4.  Reporting
 
The promotions panel  will, as a matter of report, submit  details of the appointments  to the Professional Development and Staffing Committtee and then to Council for  information.

APPOINTMENT TO CHAIRS AND READERSHIPS

1.      Eligibility

1.1    The University may appoint a person to be a Professor or Reader to a post at the University.

1.2    Appointments shall be made following a competitive recruitment and selection procedure.

2.      Criteria for appointing to Chairs and Readerships

2.1     Candidates for a Chair or Readership must demonstrate exceptional performance in either research or teaching/student experience or leadership/administration against the published criteria.

3.       Appointment Procedure

3.1     Applications for advertised posts shall be considered by an Appointments Panel.

4.       Composition of Appointments Panel

          The Vice-Chancellor (Chair)
          One Pro Vice-Chancellor
          One lay member of Council
          Head of the relevant Department (or a Dean if the appointment is a a Chair and Head of Department)
          Two external representatives for Chair appointment, one external representative for Readership
          Observer:  One senior member of the relevant department may be invited to attend meeting of the Committee as
                            an observer.

5.       Terms of reference of Appointments Panel

To appoint to Chairs and Readerships following a competetive recruitment and slection process.

6.       Reporting

The Appointments Panel report will, as a matter of report, submit details of appointments of Chair and Readers to Professional Development and Staffing Committee and then to Council for information.
