Standing Orders of the Senate

10.

Appointments by the Senate

General

  1. Elections shall normally be by nomination and ballot. Nominations shall be sent to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal before the meeting at which the appointment is to be made.
  2. Each nomination to be valid shall be proposed and seconded and shall signify the consent of the nominee.
  3. If the number of nominations received for any appointments exceeds the number of positions to be filled a vote should be taken of the members present at the meeting.

    Voting shall be conducted either on the basis of the Single Transferable Vote method or by the Alternative Transferable Vote method if there is only one vacancy.
  4. On the occasion of an election two members of the Registry staff in attendance at the meeting shall act as scrutineers.

Court of Governors

Each of the 30 representatives appointed by and from the Senate on the Court of Governors of the Institution shall hold office for a period of three years from the 1st September following election. The election shall take place in the Easter Term and shall be so arranged that 10 representatives retire each year.

Council

Each of the 10 representatives appointed by and from the Senate on the Council of the Institution shall hold office for a period of two years from the 1st September following election. The election shall take place in the Easter Term.

Standing Committees of Council

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal is an ex-officio member of all the Standing Committees of Council. During the months of November or December the Senate shall elect, normally for a period of three years, its representatives on the following Standing Committees of the Council:
  1. Staffing Committee (6 representatives)
  2. Finance and General Purposes Committee (3 of the Senate representatives on Council)*
  3. Nominations Committee (1 of the senate represenatatives on Council and one alternate)

*Subject to a proviso that members of these Committees continue in office only as long as they remain current members of Senate.

Joint Council and Senate Committees

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal is an ex-officio member of all Joint Council/Senate Committees. In the Easter term the Senate shall normally elect for a period of three years, its representatives on the following Joint Committees:
  1. Joint Committee on the Use of Welsh (3 representatives, one of whom shall be Chairman of the School of Welsh Medium Studies)
  2. Charter Committee (3 representatives)*
  3. Planning and Resources Committee (4 representatives)*
  4. Committee for the Nomination of Fellows (2 representatives)
  5. Equal Opportunities Committee (1 representative)
  6. Health, Safety and Environmental Committee (2 representatives)

*Subject to a proviso that members of these Committees continue in office only as long as they remain current members of Senate.

9.
Each of the four representatives of the Senate on the University Court shall hold office for a period of three years from the date of appointment or such lesser time as the Senate may direct. The Senate shall nominate one of its representatives on the University Court for appointment by the University Court to the University Council.

Selection Committees

10.
When choosing its representative on a Joint Standing Committee of Selection for a Chair, Senate shall not nominate the retiring Professor.
