- Membership of the Senate
- The composition of the Senate is laid down in Statute 17 as follows:
Ex-officio Members
- The Vice Chancellor, who shall be Chairman of the Senate.
- The Pro Vice-Chancellor or Pro Vice-Chancellors.
- The Heads of Departments.
- The Deans of the Faculties (if not already members).
- The Director of Postgraduate Studies.
- The Director of Information Studies.
- Members elected from and by the members of the Academic Staff subject to and in accordance with the Ordinances.
- Three students elected from and by the Organisation of Students.
- The number of members elected under (a) and (b) above shall not exceed the total number of ex officio members of the Senate.
The Senate shall have the power to co-opt not more than three members from the members of the Academic Staff.
Non-voting Members
The Senate shall have the power to invite to its meetings without voting powers such other persons as the Senate may decide. - The members elected by and from the Academic Staff plus the three student members shall not be greater in number than the total number of Ex-officio Members. The total number of elected members shall be 12.
- If the Head of a Department is granted leave of absence by the Institution, or is absent from the Institution through illness, the Acting Head of Department may attend meetings of the Senate during the period of absence.
- The student members of the Senate shall not be entitled to attend, participate in or receive any papers concerning any business of the Senate affecting the appointment, promotion or personal affairs of any individual member of the staff of the Institution or the admission, academic assessment or personal affairs of any individual student of the Institution, or which the Senate shall in its discretion direct to be taken in the absence of the student members.
