Centre for the History of Medicine

The Centre for the History of Medicine provides a focus within the Department of History & Welsh History for research in the history of medicine and cognate areas such as the history of science and technology. At the moment it is the only such centre established at any other Welsh university. The Centre brings together existing research strengths in this area within the Department and within the University as a whole and provides an institutional context for the Department's research core in the history of science, technology and medicine. It is also the home for the Department's MA in the History of Medicine.

The Centre is dedicated to:

• promoting new research in the history of medicine and related areas.
• hosting a range of activities such as conferences, seminars and workshops to raise the profile of research in the history of medicine and related areas within the University and across Wales.
• providing a context for exploring collaborative funding opportunities in the history of medicine and related areas of historical research.
• developing new initiatives to introduce students at undergraduate and graduate level to the history of medicine and related areas.

The core of researchers in the history of medicine and related areas in the Department of History & Welsh History includes Prof. Phillipp Schofield, Dr. Iwan Rhys Morus, Dr. Martyn Powell, Dr. Owen Roberts and Dr. Stephen Thompson. Research interest in medical and scientific history ranges from the mediaeval to the modern eras. Whilst the Centre for the History of Medicine is based within the Department of History & Welsh History it actively seeks to encourage interest and activity in the history of medicine and related areas throughout the University and seeks to develop collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects with researchers in the field at other Welsh universities as well as further afield.
