History students give stamp of approval

Students interviewed for the annual poll also gave a rating of 91% when asked if they were satisfied with the academic support offered.

The Department’s flagship History degree scheme scored an overall student satisfaction rating of 94%, as well as 95% for the teaching on the course and 90% for learning resources.

Dr David Ceri Jones, Head of History & Welsh History at Aberystwyth University, said: “We are delighted as a department to have performed so strongly once again in this year’s NSS, showing increases on last year’s excellent results in many areas. We continue to consistently outperform the sector average, and our flagship single honours V100 History degree has once again returned very high levels of student satisfaction.

“At the heart of the department’s mission is our determination to provide intellectually stimulating research-led teaching throughout our undergraduate and postgraduate provision, with a strong emphasis on small group-teaching, and a friendly supportive learning environment. This has been reflected in the very strong performance in the academic support category in particular. Aberystwyth remains one of the most fulfilling and satisfying places to study History.

The Department’s achievements are part of a wider success story at Aberystwyth University which has been rated best in Wales and a top five UK university for overall student satisfaction in the 2017 NSS.

The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 91% - well above the average UK figure of 84%.

The NSS figures follow closely on the heels of the latest employability figures for UK universities which showed that 95% of graduates were in work or further study six months after leaving Aberystwyth University in 2016.

The National Student Survey is carried out annually by IPSOS Mori on behalf of all the UK’s funding councils and other bodies, interviewing more than 300,000 final year students in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Students are asked to rate institutions on the quality of teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, learning community and student voice.

Aberystwyth University’s rankings are based on the overall satisfaction question and use the list of higher education institutes from The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
