GREGYNOG MEDIEVAL COLLOQUIUM, 2012

Students and staff met at the end of February for the annual medieval colloquium, held at the University of Wales house and conference centre at Gregynog, 27-29 Feb. 2012. This year’s colloquium was organised by History and Welsh History at Aberystwyth and the theme was “Rich and Poor in the Middle Ages”. The guest speaker was Professor Christopher Dyer (Leicester), who spoke on the topic of ‘What was it like to be poor in the middle ages?’ Other speakers took a number of approaches to the theme, exploring aspects of medieval wealth and poverty as well as extending the topic to take account of perceptions of richness and poverty in contexts that ranged from students in the medieval university to narratives of the crusades via Cistercian approaches to poverty. On the Tuesday afternoon, as ever, there was a trip out, this time to Dolforwyn Castle. The colloquium, which has run for over thirty years, will next year be organised by Trinity St Davids and we look forward to another highly enjoyable and engaging visit.
