Information for Prospective Postgraduates
Material Considerations
Residence and Accommodation
Aberystwyth has a wide variety of accommodation to suit graduate students of all tastes. Initial enquiries may be made through the University's Accommodation service.
Funding
Funding is a matter of importance to all postgraduate students, and advice on sources and strategies is available from the department on request. Further information can also be obtained from Funding and Fees.
Bursaries
The Department of History and Welsh History also offers a number of MA bursaries to MA students, of between £500 and £1500. Successful candidates will normally have achieved a First Class degree at undergraduate level but have been unsuccessful in obtaining funding from elsewhere.
Those wishing to be considered for a bursary should make a formal application for postgraduate study to the Department in the usual way, including a letter requesting consideration. The deadline for applications is July 2012. Decisions on the award of bursaries will be made in July/August 2012. Further information may be obtained from the Postgraduate Tutor.
Applying to Aberystwyth
The Department of History and Welsh History accepts applications for postgraduate study throughout the academic year, and up to Registration (normally the third week in September). Applicants may, however, wish to note the following key dates:
- end of February - deadline for receipt of Ph.D applications wishing to be considered for a University Funding Award
- mid-April - closing date for AHRB and ESRC Awards applications (MA, Ph.D)
- mid-July - deadline for receipt of MA applications wishing to be considered for a Departmental Bursary
Specific dates vary annually, so we recommend that applicants contact the Department for further details.
Members of the Department are always glad to help with enquiries about postgraduate study, whether it be to help select an appropriate taught Masters course, or to define a field suitable for exploration through an M.Phil or Ph.D research degree. Further information can be obtained in the first instance from the Department's Postgraduate Admissions Tutor, who can also make arrangements for a visit to the Department, and for the exploration of research possibilities with particular specialists on our staff.
An Open Day for those interested in postgraduate study is held each year, usually in November. This is an occasion to visit the Department, meet with those who would be teaching you and supervising your research, and to explore our facilities. Expert advice will be available on choosing a suitable course or research project, sources of funding, and on the completion of applications forms to institutions and funding bodies. Those wishing for more information about the Open Day, or intending to visit us on the Open Day itself, are advised to contact the Department in advance.
For application forms, or more information see Postgraduate Information.
