Biography
Professor Richard Rathbone PhD (London), FRHistS was, until 2003, Professor of the modern history of Africa in the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London where he is still an Emeritus Professor and Professorial Research Associate. He has held fellowships in the universities of Ghana, Lesotho, South Africa (Cape Town and Witwatersrand), Harvard, Princeton and Bordeaux. Since 2005 he has been one of the Royal Historical Society's vice-presidents. His books include African history: a very short introduction (with John Parker) Oxford, 2007, Nkrumah and the Chiefs; the politics of chieftaincy in Ghana, 1951-60, Oxford 2000, Africa's urban past (edited with David Anderson) Oxford, 1999, Murder and politics in colonial Ghana .
