Time Off for Public Duties
Members of staff who are given paid leave by the University to undertake public duties, as defined by Section 50 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, are required to pay to the University any sums to which they are entitled by way of attendance allowance or compensation for loss of earnings (net of income tax at the marginal rate) in accordance with the terms and provisions of the following scheme:
Staff Granted up to 18 Days Paid Leave for Public Duties
Repayment of attendance allowance or compensation for loss of earnings (net of income tax at the marginal rate) as above. If the attendance allowance or compensation for loss of earnings is greater than a day's pay then unpaid leave shall be given.
Staff Granted Further Days Paid Leave for Additional Public Duties
Repayment to the University as above.
Staff Granted Further Days Unpaid Leave
As no pay is involved, the member of staff is free to claim and retain any allowances for which he/she is eligible.
This scheme does not cover money paid as earned income or as fees for work performed, nor does it apply to travel or subsistence expenses.
In the case of part-time members of staff, it is assumed that any public duties are performed during the period when they are not required by their contracts of employment to be working for the University, but if in fact the public duty is performed during such time then the provisions of this scheme shall operate.
In considering requests for time off from members of local councils the following guidelines are used:
- Ceredigion County Council - up to 18 days per annum;
- Chairpersons of Committees and holders of analogous offices - up to 6 additional days, looking at the need in each case.
