Pension Schemes
Academic and Related Staff
Academic and Related Staff employed on contracts of three months or more are eligible, immediately on starting their employment, to join USS, the occupational pension scheme provided by the University.
Unless prior to becoming an employee, the member of staff declares in writing a wish not to be a member of USS, he/she will automatically be deemed to be a member from the date of commencement and contributions will be deducted accordingly. At present, employee contributions are 6.35% of salary and the University contribution equals 16% of salary. A contracting out certificate is in force in respect of USS.
If, within three months of commencement, a member of staff decides to make other arrangements, their withdrawal from the scheme will be retrospective and they will be deemed as never having entered the scheme. Their contributions and those of the University will be repaid. Thereafter, if a member of staff subsequently wishes to withdraw from the scheme they will be required to give 28 days notice to the University.
Members of staff requiring further information are asked to contact the Salaries Section or information can be obtained from the USS, website at www.usshq.co.uk.
