Injury - Needlestick (Hypodermic)

First Aid Treatment for Needlestick Injuries

In the event of needlestick injury from a hypodermic needle (e.g. in a rubbish bag / bin, on the ground or a chair etc) the following treatment should be given

  • Encourage the puncture injury to bleed
  • Wash well under cold running water without soap and cover with a dry dressing
  • Seek medical advice as soon as possible

Note a protective injection against Hepatitis B (but not HIV) can be given, but needs to be done within 4 hours. Check with the Hospital Accident and Emergency Department for their recommendation.
