Karen Cameron is a glacial microbial ecologist. Her Sêr Cymru II COFUND fellowship, "MEGARISE (Oct 2016 - 2019), considers how microbiota on the surfaces of glaciers contribute towards surface ice darkening, which leads to enhanced glacial melt; an event which contributes towards sea level rise, and which threatens the resources, lifestyles and lives of humanity worldwide. This project will characterise the composition and function of microbiota sampled from ice surfaces with a view towards linking this to their effect on surface ice darkening. Community responses to changes in environmental conditions will be investigated, and relationships between community members will be considered.
