Profile

Sarah received a BSc in Zoology in 2002 from the University of Liverpool after which she volunteered on a variety of environmental projects. Sarah is a zoologist with a passion for the marine environment & since 2003 she has been involved with the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre in New Quay. There she worked as Project Manager & was responsible for the redevelopment of the centre, its interpretation, educational activities & managing the centre's research into the local marine wildlife. This includes land & boat marine wildlife surveys & photo-identification of the bottlenose dolphins of Cardigan Bay as well as managing all the volunteers involved with the project. In 2009 Sarah began working for Wildlife Trusts Wales as Marine Campaigns & Advocacy Officer, her work there focused on Marine Act implementation within the National Assembly & the Welsh Assembly Government, working closely with other eNGO's.

Sarah has returned to University to study full time for a PhD investigating the use of remote sensing data for modelling & monitoring the seasonal distribution & abundance of large marine species over whole sea areas, in collaboration with the Countryside Council for Wales. The research will also investigate the use of a wide range of new digital technologies (e.g., land-based high powered telescopes) to support the observation of populations & will make use of data acquired from a range of land & boat-based instruments as well as from aircraft & satellite. The main aim of the research is to identify key areas (hotspots) for species & to provide dynamic datasets for whole sea areas essential for marine management purposes (e.g., for informing marine spatial planning, nature conservation measures & sustainable fisheries management).

Additional Information

Sarah is funded through a KESS scholarship from the European Social Fund (ESF) through the European Union's Convergence program administered by the Welsh Assembly Government. The project is in collaboration with the Countryside Council for Wales.
