Facilities for Teaching and Learning

Here at IGES we have a range of excellent facilities for both teaching and learning - perfect for helping you achieve the best possible result and to explore new and exciting avenues.

Lecture Theatres

IGES teaching facilities The department is located in the Llandinam building at the heart of Penglais campus. A range of lecture theatres are used for teaching, all containing high quality audio visual equipment. Smaller seminar and teaching rooms are used for tutorials, allowing for more focussed and in-depth discussion.

Laboratories

Laboratory Facilities at IGES IGES uses four major laboratories for undergraduate teaching. These include the Kidson Laboratory which is fully equipped for sedimentological and geochemical analyses, and compliments smaller geochemical research laboratories; one of these houses two Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometers. The department has an excellent resource in our Remote Sensing Laboratory based in the building. The unit provides students with access to some of the up to date computing facilities and software available for data processing. The unit also hosts a Definiens Centre of Excellence, one of six worldwide, exploiting their objected-oriented segmentation and classification software suite for a range of diverse applications ranging from regional habitat mapping and change detection to tree crown delineation.

Computer resources

Students at PJM Lounge Adjacent to the Institute is one of the largest computer rooms on Penglais campus, which recently received a full upgrade of all equipment. This room is used for departmental teaching where students can access both specialised and general packages. Information technology and computer packages are important tools for all students within IGES. Students are introduced to specialist software for mapping, statistical analysis and modelling during their first two years. They are also encouraged to use the Internet and CD-ROM resources to find relevant data and information.

All university residences have access to the University network which students can hook up their personal computer to. Alternatively there are a range of other computer rooms across campus, from within the residences to the library and Old College, many of which are available 24hrs.

Libraries

Within IGES there is the E.G. Bowen Map Library, which holds over 80,000 maps and 500 atlases as well as a comprehensive reference collection. It also contains past undergraduate dissertations and project essay.

Students outside the National Library of Wales The libraries here at Aberystwyth University are modern and well-equipped, with study places for around 1100 students. Housing more than 700,000 volumes, subscriptions to regular issues of over 3000 current journals, and a wide range of electronic resources, they provide a contemporary learning environment for the modern student. Electronic resources including e-journals and e-books are available both on and off campus, allowing 24hr access to key materials.

The National Library of Wales is based in Aberystwyth and students are encouraged to apply for a readers ticket to access the wealth of knowledge available at this copyright library. As one of Britain's copyright library, The National Library of Wales is entitled to receive a copy of every book published in the UK. It holds over 6 million volumes, maps and prints and is an invaluable resource right on your doorstep, as it is only a three minute walk from the Institute.
