Research Interests
- Use of Earth Observation (EO) data combined with advanced image processing algorithms for mapping land use/cover distribution and of its changes, occurred from either geo-hazards (mainly fires, floods) or anthropogenic activities (e.g. mining activity, deforestation).
- Exploitation of EO data alone or synergistically with land surface process models (principally Soil Vegetation Transfer models) for computing key state variables of the Earth's energy and water budget, for characterising land surface interactions and their feedback processes.
- Conducting benchmarking studies to algorithms applied to EO data and/or deterministic land surface process models, including the implementation of advanced sensitivity analysis techniques.
Biography
George P. Petropoulos completed his graduate studies (MSc, PhD) at the University of London in 2008, specialising in the coupling of remote sensing observations with simulations from land surface process models for deriving spatially distributed maps of parameters characterising tland surface energy balance. Then, he worked for 1,5 year as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Bristol in the UK, focusing principally in the exploitation of remote sensing data in post-fire hazard assessment. Since then and until the end of 2011, George worked in Greece as a research fellow in different research and teaching establishments. His last position before joining IGES was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the European Space Agency (ESA). George has participated in various research projects funded by the European Commission, ESA and various other national and international funding bodies. He so far he has co-authored a number of articles published in peer-reviewed international journals, books and conferences.
