IMAPS' Professor Gennady Mishuris opened the proceedings with a lively introduction to the method which included a potted history of the lives and distinguished mathematical careers of Norbert Wiener and Eberhard Hopf. Manchester's Professor David Abrahams (President of the IMA) then delivered a brilliant presentation in which he expanded on the method's history and covered some of its many intricacies. The first day of the workshop also saw talks from Jane Lawrie (Brunel), Alexander and Natasha Movchan (Liverpool), Enrico Radi (Reggio Emilia, Italy) and Andrea Piccolroaz (Trento, Italy). After a day of presentations on such wide-ranging topics as the acoustics of jet engines and fracture mechanics, the participants held a discussion session during which possibilities for future collaboration and external funding were explored.

The second day of the workshop began with Professor Sergei Rogosin (Belarusian State University) giving a superb summary of recent theoretical results and algorithms in the area of matrix factorisation, before Vladimir Kisil (Leeds) gave another talk with a rather “pure” flavour. Many participants commented on how much they had enjoyed the variety of presentations on offer, encompassing the pure, applied and engineering viewpoints of Wiener-Hopf techniques. Aberystwyth PhD student Adam Vellender and Professor Gennady Mishuris gave the final two talks of the workshop.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Noel Lloyd closed the workshop by highlighting that these are difficult times for higher education in Wales and the UK as a whole, and will be for years to come. He also gave visiting scientists a brief history of Aberystwyth before wishing everybody a safe journey home. It was agreed by all that the workshop had been a resounding success, and tentative planning has already begun to host a second Wiener-Hopf workshop in two years' time.
