Material for Current Members

Welcome to the Aberystwyth Mathematics Club (AMC). You can read/download any material on this page for free. Our documents are in pdf format: for which you will require Adobe Reader on your computer.

Explanatory materials will cover mathematical topics, and problem sheets will test knowledge and un- derstanding of these areas. Three or four topics will be covered each year. Correspondents are invited to submit solutions by given deadlines. Outline solutions will be posted on this page after the deadline.

We expect to receive solutions in (one of) the following forms:

  • As an email attachment sent to the address: aberystwyth-maths-club@aber.ac.uk
  • As an electronic picture (having scanned your handwritten solution)
  • Regular mail. Our address is Aberystwyth Mathematics Club, IMAPS, Aberystwyth University, Penglais, Aberystwyth, SY23 3BZ, UK.

On receipt of solutions we will print them, comment by hand, scan the marked script, and return it as an electronic picture. If you have difficulties reading the picture, please contact us.

We would be grateful if you would acknowledge the Aberystwyth Mathematics Club if you display any of the downloadable material to third parties. The AMC will use different source materials whilst preparing some of the documents. Acknowledgements will be made on individual sheets.

Supported material for the first topic Quadratic Equations and the corresponding Problem Sheet 1 are now available. The material consists of two parts: Preliminary Notes 1 and Explanatory Notes 1. It is strongly advised you read both of them, however, if you feel that the preliminary part is trivial for you - please skip reading it and come straight to the Explanatory Notes 1.

Remark: Problems with superscript in the Problem Sheet are slightly more difficult in comparison with those without this mark. However, it may happen that you will decide differently...

Also included here are more advanced problems which were kindly provided by Prof. V. Liskevitch (affiliated staff member). We suggest you try to solve them after trying the standard problem sheet. Attempting these advanced problems is not obligatory, however, we will be happy to mark any solutions submitted for this additional section.

Explanatory Materials 1 and Problem Sheet 1 are now available.
