The Learned Society of Wales
30 January 2010

Professor Ken Walters FRS, IMAPS Distinguished Research Professor, has accepted an invitation to be one of the Founding Fellows of the “Learned Society of Wales”, which will serve as the Welsh equivalent to the British Academy or Royal Academy.
The aims and role of the new Society, as described in its Prospectus, are as follows:
“Such learned societies and academies already exist in virtually all advanced cultures, helping to establish a benchmark of the highest international standards in scholarship and research. Within the context of these islands, not only do such societies operate at British level through such venerable institutions as the Royal Society and the British Academy, but they have also long been established as key national bodies both in Ireland and Scotland……And yet Wales still lacks any such national society of learning…
Conscious of this major deficit we, as Founding Fellows, have determined to act together to address and remedy it by establishing The Learned Society of Wales…..”
Overall the Society will promote learning in Wales and will serve as an independent advisory body to the Welsh Assembly Government.
The Learned Society of Wales will be formally launched in Cardiff on May 25th 2010.
