New IMAPS Seminars for the Institute

15 May 2010

Following the recent SWOT analysis it emerged that there was substantial enthusiasm for an internal seminar scheme.  Thus, a new double seminar series has been set up within the institute with the aim of allowing institute members to get to know better what other members within the institute do and what their research interests are.  All the talks are aimed to allow everyone in the audience at least a general understanding of the topic being presented/discussed and thus all are encouraged to attend - especially if someone is talking about something you have not heard of or seen a talk about before at IMAPS.  The idea of this internal IMAPS seminar series is to have an open and relaxed atmosphere.  Unlike conventional seminars, the focus here will be the interaction between the speaker and the audience.  Everyone is invited to attend including but not limited to the fourth-year undergraduates, Postgraduates, Administrative Staff, Technical Staff, Post-Doctoral Staff, and Academic Staff.

Every first Thursday of the month will be two presentations from two different postgraduates (or perhaps fourth-year undergraduates) with occasional fill-ins from technical staff and Post-Doctoral researchers when two presenters cannot be found among the students; these will be known as the "Postgraduate Seminars" regardless of who will be speaking.  Every third Thursday of the month the speaker will generally be an academic staff member, but may be filled with a Post-Doctoral researcher if an academic cannot be found for that seminar; these will be known as the "Academic Seminars" regardless of who will be speaking.  Both form part of the new IMAPS double seminar series however.

The two talks in the Postgraduate Seminars will be around 20 minutes each allowing 10 minutes for questions and discussion, and the talk in the Academic Seminars will be around 30-40 minutes in length allowing for 20-30 minutes for tea/coffee and discussion.  All will start promptly at 13:00h at take place (at least for now) in the second-floor common room, so please remember to bring lunch along with you!
