Postgraduate Study in Mathematics and Physics
Mathematics and Physics at Aberystwyth have an established reputation in leading-edge research and frequently have fully-funded PhD studentships (e.g., from EPSRC, NERC, STFC, University Scholarships) available for UK/EU students holding a good honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject.
Mathematics
Extensive research is carried out in the areas of mathematical modelling of solids and structures, rheology of complex fluids and foams, analysis and measure theory, functional analysis, operator algebras, open quantum systems and algebraic combinatorics. See the following group pages for more information::
- Algebraic Combinatorics
- Mathematical Modelling of Structures, Fluids and Solids
- Quantum Structures, Information and Control
Facilities are offered for students to read for PhD and MPhil degrees by research in these topics. A list of typical Mathematics PhD projects is available. IMAPS research students are eligible to enrol on the postgraduate courses of the taught course centres of MAGIC (Mathematics Access Grid: Instruction and Collaboration) and the Taught Course Centre for Mathematical Sciences. These are consortia of universities offering postgraduate courses over video links; the former led by Sheffield University and the latter by Oxford University.
Physics
Extensive research is carried out in the areas of:
The institute has state-of-the-art-laboratories, supercomputing and 3D visualisation facilities for research projects, and makes extensive use of national and international research facilities. A list of typical Materials Physics and Solar System Physics PhD projects is available.
How to apply
Prospective postgraduates must submit a formal application to the Postgraduate Admissions Office. Once this is made, suitable candidates will be invited to visit the institute to learn at first hand of the research activities, to meet members of staff and to see the facilities available.
Informal inquiries for further information to the institute in advance of applying are welcome, please email us at imaps@aber.ac.uk, or write to us at our contact address.
Funding
IMAPS frequently has available UK/EU studentships (e.g., from EPSRC, NERC, STFC), and an informal inquiry to the institute will determine what is available at any particular time. The University also runs a studentship scheme called the Aberystwyth Postgraduate Research Studentship competition.
IMAPS also offers 3 bursaries a year for Non-EU Postgraduates to cover the difference between overseas fees and UK/EU fees. For more information please contact the department at imaps@aber.ac.uk
Information about other funding sources, fees, and living costs for UK, EU and non-EU students is also available.
