Biography

Brought up in Somerset and educated at Huish’s Grammer School, Taunton, Dr. David Binding read Applied Mathematics at Aberystwyth. Following on from his PhD in 1976 on the Rheology of Lubricants he left Wales to spend 6 years in Mexico City, first as a lecturer and then as the Head of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). Dr Binding’s research interests encompass all aspects of the rheology of complex fluids. In 1988 he won the Annual Award of the British Society of Rheology, of which he is now the Honorary Treasurer and member of its Council. Both a theoretician and an experimentalist, he coordinates the activities of the Rheology Laboratory in the Institute which combines academic with industrial research. Outside of academic life he enjoys travelling, hill-walking, skiing and pool/snooker.
