University facilities

All students have access to University library and computing facilities, sports facilities, the Student Union refectory and bars on campus.  The award-winning Aberystwyth Arts Centre is also situated on the Penglais campus. There is also a Language Resource Centre (often known as the "language laboratory") which is used for some classes and is available to students also on a self-access basis.

The International English Resource Centre

The Resource Centre of the International English Centre houses a collection of book and non-book materials which has been developed to support the varied activities of the Centre. It is a specialist collection which supplements resources held in the University libraries.

The Collection

The collection comprises books, journals, education games, audio, video and computer materials for the following:

  • foreign language learners of English, from beginner to advanced level
  • the professional development of teachers and trainee teachers
  • the teaching and learning support of dyslexic individuals
  • the learning skills development of students in higher education, from both the UK and overseas
  • writing skills development of the University body including undergraduates, postgraduates and staff.

The Centre subscribes to organisations such as the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language and the British Dyslexia Association, and through its memberships receives many specialised publications. These include IATEFL Voices, Teacher Trainer, EL Gazette, Dyslexia and BDA Now. Other journals held in the Resource Centre are Basic Skills, English Teaching Professional, Journal of English for Academic Purposes and Modern English Teacher.

Services

The Centre has its own specialist computerised catalogue which is not accessible on the university's Voyager system.

The facilities of the Resource Centre are open to registered students and staff of the IEC, for reference use only, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2 - 4 pm. The Resources Officer is available at these times to answer queries.
