Celebrating Malaysian Students of Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth University Malaysian SocietyMembers of the Aberystwyth University Malaysian Society recently gathered at the Morlan Centre in Aberystwyth for an evening of cultural celebration.

The evening, organised by the Malaysian Student Society, combined a social event highlighting the cultures and customs of Malaysia, China and India with a fundraising opportunity for the Aberystwyth branch of the charity War Child.

During the evening of entertainment, over a hundred guests were treated to Malaysian style food and traditional performances of song and dance by members of the Society in addition to presentations highlighting the activities of the Society over the past year.

Raffle tickets sold in aid of War Child, with prizes donated by local businesses, individuals and organisations, raised over £165.

Commenting on the evening’s success, Melissa Tan, Vice President of the Malaysian Society, said: “We had a fantastic evening in the company of some great friends.  During the past few years the Malaysian Society in Aberystwyth has grown in numbers and our annual event has gone from strength to strength.

The majority of Malaysian students studying at Aberystwyth University are students of the Law and Criminology Department and are here for one year, their final year at University.  Making sure that they manage to settle into the local community and enjoy their time here is really important to us.  The annual Malaysian Evening is one of many social events we organise throughout the year as a way of giving students a taste of home whilst also raising money for a good cause.”

Malaysian students have a longstanding relationship with Aberystwyth and the University with the first Malaysian student thought to be Tan Sri Mohd Ghazalie bin Shafie who studied Law in 1951.  The Aberystwyth University Alumni Club of Malaysia is the strongest and most active international Alumni Society associated with Aberystwyth University and organises regular events for Aberystwyth alumni in Malaysia.
