Green Mountain College is located in Poultney, Vermont at the foot of the Taconic Mountains. The College is part of the Eco League and as such works hard to promote and specialise in environmental literacy and citizenship. The surrounding area is a haven for the outdoors lover with ample opportunity for hiking, camping and skiing with the College offering a very affordable equipment rental service. There is also a farm which is run by the students that you would be free to get involved with.

Poultney is a very small town with a population of just over 3,000 but there are great transport links with larger towns and cities in the area including New York City.


All courses are offered in English. Students from any academic department are eligible to apply at the discretion of their department’s exchange coordinator. There are a number of courses available that are similar to the following departments in Aberystwyth. GMC employs a progressive teaching technique which means that the courses are very hands on. For more information on the courses offered, please refer to the online course catalogue.

Visa Information and Other Costs

All international and exchange students must apply for a F-1 visa as well as an I-901 SEVIS to study in the US. Both of these documents have fees attached which are liable to change year on year. 

ALL students attending Green Mountain College MUST have health insurance and be able to prove that they have purchased it. Student are required to enrol in the GMC sponsored scheme when they enroll in their classes. Without the appropriate health insurance, students will not be eligible for a visa.

Getting There

Albany International airport is a 90 min drive from campus- flights take around 11 hours. There are shuttle buses available from regional airports around enrollment dates.


The first semester begins in August and ends in December. International students are expected to arrive a few days in advance of term dates. The second semester begins in January and ends in May.

How to Apply

All students wishing to go on an exchange to Green Mountain College must apply through Aberystwyth University as they must first be nominated by the international office and students usually go in the second semester of their second year unless they have special permission from their department.
