How to apply to Study Year Abroad
If you wish to apply for the SYA programme, you will need to send us a completed SYA application form, together with formal transcripts showing what you have studied, a letter of recommendation and a 200 word essay detailing why you wish to study at Aberystwyth University.
If English is not your first language and you need to improve your language competency, you will begin by developing your English language skills in intensive mode at our International English Centre. After that, you will have the opportunity to study modules from a wide variety of subjects.
The basic entry requirements are:
- A minimum of one year’s study at a university or college.
- A minimum level of English of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) if you are a non-native English speaker. Please note that many courses require non-native English speakers tohave a higher level of English level proficiency, typically ranging from IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 (TOEFL 90 to 100 iBT). However, if your level of English is between IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 61iBT, we can offer you an initial intensive English programme to bring your English level up to the standard required to follow our regular academic courses or modules.
The Study Year Abroad brochure and application form is available in the related links.
Completed applications can be sent by post or email.
Modules - choosing your courses
Students are advised to take the equivalent of 60 Aberystwyth Credits (30 ECTS) per semester. The following links allow you to navigate to pages describing each module in terms of the content and the number of teaching/contact hours. Final module choices are not confirmed until the time of registration. You need to make sure that you choose modules that are accepted by your University. Full instructions on selecting modules are provided with the application pack.
Aberystwyth University is able to offer a place in University accommodation for full-time Undergraduate and Postgraduate Study Year Abroad students on a first-come-first-served basis.
As soon as your place to study at Aberystwyth University is confirmed you will be contacted by the Accommodation Office, inviting you to apply for accommodation. Please note that a place in University accommodation may be offered, but a specific type of room or location is not guaranteed and Accommodation Licence Periods do apply.
