Professor Jenny EdkinsThesis
This thesis, entitled: The performativity of threat: Hamas and the European Union after the 2006 Legislative Elections in Palestine, is curious about exploring relations of threat which emerge through the performative production of that which is made threatening.
Cultivating the theory of performativity in gender studies, primarily the works of Judith Butler, this project develops a theory for the performativity of threat: how producing threats impacts upon the intelligibility of events, shapes relations between actors and impedes an understanding of uniqueness. Using a performative lens this project explores how the EU reacted to Hamas’s electoral victory in 2006 and likewise how Hamas felt about its own victory and the subsequent European response. The project aims to recreate this performed event and investigate the conversations between the EU and Hamas, while discovering where alternative modes of interacting existed.
