Visiting Scholars Programme

The Department of International Politics is always pleased to consider applications from individuals wishing to spend time in Aberystwyth as Visiting Scholars. Each year we are able to host a limited number of Visiting Scholars working on individual projects that relate to ongoing research activity within the Department. Applications are welcome from academics, policy-makers, members of non-governmental organisations, charities and think-tanks, creative artists, and businesspeople. Applicants may be based in the UK or abroad.

Visiting Scholars are provided with office space and access to IT and Library facilities. In addition to pursuing their own research, they are able to participate in the vibrant and rich research culture of the Department, attending seminars and conferences and presenting their work – as appropriate – to one or more of the Department’s Research Groups. No funding is available, and Scholars must make their own arrangements to cover travel, accommodation and subsistence costs. (Non-EU Scholars must also satisfy all relevant UK immigration regulations.) There is no set time period for Visiting Scholarships, which may range in duration from as little as a few days up to a maximum of one academic year. No bench fees are currently charged.

Applications for Visiting Scholarships may be made at any time. Applications should consist of a statement of motivation (including dates of proposed visit), a curriculum vitae, and an outline of the proposed research project (maximum two pages). This outline should explain the aims and objectives of the project, demonstrate how it fits with the research strategy of the Department, and give an indication of the work to be undertaken in Aberystwyth. Applications will be assessed on the basis of the calibre of the applicant, the quality of the project, and the likely benefit – for the applicant and the Department – that will accrue from the visit. The Department has only limited office space for Visiting Scholars and may sometimes have to reject excellent applications for that reason.

Applications and inquiries should be addressed to the Departmental Director of Research (see Staff List). Individuals currently registered for doctoral degrees are not eligible for Visiting Scholarships, but may apply to spend a period of time in the Department through a different route. Inquiries about visits from current PhD students should be addressed to the Departmental Director of Admissions and External Affairs (see Staff List).
