Avoiding Plagiarism

Each time you hand in a piece of work for assessment you will need to complete a formal declaration that you have not plagiarised.

SafeAssign, a software application designed to detect plagiarism, is being piloted by some departments at Aberystwyth University.

Advice and resources for avoiding plagiarism

  • Ensure that you have read and understood the information provided by your department about plagiarism. If you are at all unsure, check with your tutor/supervisor.
  • Ensure that you meet your department’s requirements on how your bibliographies, footnotes and endnotes should look by referring to the citation advice and guidelines they supply. These are often located in study programme handbooks and departmental advice online for current students. Find general advice and resources for bibliographic referencing here.
  • Read widely and use high quality, authoritative, peer-reviewed information in your study and research and carefully evaluate anything else you refer to. Primo http://primo.aber.ac.uk/ provides library catalogue and journal article searches and portals to high-quality databases. 
  • Help to find quality information sources is available through printed and online guides, your subject librarians, the Information Services enquiry service and skills training.
  • The Internet Detective
    This online tutorial explores the nature of plagiarism and provides some useful strategies for evaluating and citing online information sources.
  • The Effective Study Collection located on the top floor of Hugh Owen Library comprises books to support the development of your study skills and research skills.
