You can help the University Library
The Library is at the heart of the University. If it is ailing then the quality of teaching and research decline. Over recent years we have fought hard to maintain the standard of library collections and we are pleased to see that the Aberystwyth University Library services are rated as the best in Wales in the annual National Student Survey. An effective library and information service is essential if we are to attract the best students and to provide essential support for world class research. These are vital issues if the University is to remain competitive in the coming decade.
After the disastrous fire in the Old College in 1885 Principal Edwards collected funds in the USA for a new Library in the Old College. Today as the government reduces its support for higher education and the cost of library materials, both print and electronic, continues to escalate far beyond average inflation we have a real need for support from private sources. It is for this reason that we are asking you to consider a donation of £25 or more per year to establish a “Friends of the Library” scheme. The aim of the scheme is to allow us to raise funds for the purchase and conservation of significant additions to the Library’s collections – whether in print or electronic form.
Besides the satisfaction of contributing to the Library’s collections Friends will receive several important benefits in return for their subscription:
- The right to register as an Associate Borrower from the library – this gives entitlement to borrow up to six standard loan books for two weeks at any one time. N.B. Postage fees to or from Aberystwyth are payable in addition by the borrower.
- A twice yearly copy of the Information Services Newsletter outlining new service developments and activities along with special features on items in our collections
- Invitation to exhibitions and special events which are held in Information Services through the year.
- A commemorative volume indicating the names of Friends will be maintained.
