Student Halls Network

All University Halls of Residence have a 10mbps connection via a wired network socket in every study bedroom. There is no connection or usage charge for this service. This service is available to registered users at Aberystwyth University only.

Connecting your computer to the network

To connect your computer to the network you will need:

  • to have an Aberystwyth University email account
  • a computer with an ethernet (network interface) card (most now come with this as standard)
  • a computer running Windows Vista, XP or 7, Apple Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or above, Linux with 802.1x supplicant
  • an RJ45 network cable - these are available to buy on campus

Your use of the network

In using the network you are bound by the Information Services Regulations and Guidelines and you should familiarise yourself with what these contain. Of special interest to users of the Halls Network are the guidelines on Non-Academic computer use by students.

It is essential when connecting your computer to the Halls Network that you ensure it is secure from virus attacks, spyware, hacking and unauthorised access from other users. You should read and follow our advise on keeping your computer secure

The Halls Network has its own firewall, which works on a default deny basis. However students are able to open ports in the firewall if required to enable programs or applications to run. Details on how this firewall works and how to open ports can be found in our FAQ pages.

Once connected to the Halls Network you will be able to access your University filestore, the Public printers and electronic information resources from your room in halls.
