Wireless access for visitors to Aberystwyth University

Visitors wishing to make use of the Aberystwyth University wireless service must ensure their computer:

  • has the latest service pack and updates installed for their operating system
  • has up-to-date anti-virus software
  • is free from viruses and spyware

before coming to campus.

All use of the Aberystwyth University network is governed by the Information Services Regulation and Guidelines and the JANET Acceptable Use Policy.

Visitors from other academic institutions

Aberystwyth University participates in the Janet Roaming Service.

This means that visitors from other participating academic institutions can connect to their own institutions network via Aberystwyth University's eduroam wireless network while visiting our campus. You can check whether your institution participates in this service on the JANET Roaming Service website

You should make arrangements to use this service with your home institution BEFORE coming to Aberystwyth University.

 

Conference/event attendees

If you are unable to make use of the JANET Roaming Service (above) you should ask your conference organiser about wireless internet access.  Conference/Event wireless access:

  • is NOT available for attendees under the age of 18 (proof of age is required)
  • only allows web traffic so users will not be able to check their mail through a mail handler (e.g. Outlook, Windows Mail), use VPN, Shibboleth authenticate or access online games while connected to this network.

The network SSID and key will be provided by the conference/event organiser.

 

Conference/event organisers

If you are hosting a conference or event and want to provide wireless access for attendees, we can broadcast a wireless network specifically for your event. This will only be available for the duration of your event. The network will be secured with a network key which we will give to you so you can manage access to this wireless network yourself. Please email is@aber.ac.uk to request this.

You should note:

  • this network is NOT available for attendees under the age of 18
  • this network only allows web traffic so users will not be able to check their mail through a mail handler (e.g. Outlook, Windows Mail), use VPN, Shibboleth authenticate or access online games while connected to this network.
  • as the conference/event organiser you take responsibility for all use made of this network
  • if you have arranged your conference or event through the conference office they will normally arrange the wireless network for you.

 

General Visitors

All other visitors to Aberystwyth University can use our visitors wireless network: rh-ymwelwyr

This network is secured with a network key.

To connect to this network you will need to complete a Registration form for visitor's wireless access and take the form, your computer and some form of photo id (driving license, passport) to the Enquiry Desk in the Hugh owen Library.  A member of staff will connect your computer to this network.
Please note:

  • this network is only available to people visiting Aberystwyth University NOT for members of the general public
  • this network in NOT available for visitors under the age of 18 (proof of age is required)
