Our Academic Year

The academic year at Aberystwyth is divided into two semesters:

Semester 1  26 September 2011 - 16 December 2012
First Semester Examination Period 16 January 2012 - 28 January 2012

Semester 2 9 January 2012 - 2 June 2012
Easter Break 30 March 2012 - 22 April 2012
Second Semester Examination Period 14 May 2012 - 2 June 2012

Assessment

The method of assessment varies from module to module and includes written assignments and written examinations. We have no special examination procedures for visiting students. Once you have access to our internal database, you can check the method of assessment, by looking up the modules in the module database.  If there is an exam, the examination period is at the end of the semester, unless the module runs over two semesters and then it is at the end of Semester 2.

Registration and Introduction

At the beginning of each semester there is an induction programme for Exchange & Visiting students organised by the Study Abroad Office, students will also meet with Department of Law & Criminology Visiting Student Co-ordinator to discuss their programme of studies in Law and to be introduced to the organisation of activities in the Department of Law & Criminology.

Tutorship and Guidance

Visiting students are allocated, in the same way as home students, to a member of staff to act as a personal tutor, whose role is to discuss any curricular or extra-curricular matter raised by the student. The Departmental Visiting Student Co-ordinator and European Liaison Officer are also available for consultation. Since Aberystwyth is a relatively small University, academic and other staff are normally available for consultation and discussion of any problems at quite short notice. In addition to the National Health Service, there is also a University Medical Officer, and the Students' Union provides welfare services. Student 'mentors' are also offered to visiting students to ensure they make early contact with British students.
