Student Activities
Societies
Law and Criminology students are involved in a number of societies at Aberystwyth:
Law Society
The Aberystwyth University Law Society seeks to help you enjoy your time at Aberystwyth, whilst also preparing you for your career after University. The Society organises themed fortnightly socials, where Society members can enjoy the company of like-minded people. The Law Society is also responsible for organising the social highlight of the year, the annual Law Ball. The formal ball is always well attended by students and lecturers alike and normally entails a three course meal, guest speakers and dancing late into the night. In order to aid your career development and facilitate your career choice, the Society organises trips to both law fairs (prospective solicitor trainees) and to the Inns of Court in London (prospective barrister pupils).
For more information about the society, email scty97@aber.ac.uk or you can visit www.auls.org or http://users.aber.ac.uk/scty97
Mooting Society
Mooting is a fun and competitive extra-curricular activity open to all students in order to help them apply and develop the key advocacy, litigation and transferable skills necessary across a wide range of legal and non-legal careers. Find out more: Aberystwyth Mooting Society information
Criminology Society
The Criminology Society is for anyone studying criminology, either as a full or joint degree scheme. You will also be very welcome if you are studying for a law or psychology degree. The Society offers you the chance to meet and socialise with people on your course in a formal and informal way. We have fun and fantastic socials every other week and we hold an annual Christmas meal and end of year celebration events. We invite guest speakers to come along and share their experiences and to discuss career opportunities. We understand that university life should be enjoyed while you learn, so to prepare you for your future career we offer fun team building activities including white water rafting and paintballing.
For more information about the Society and to join, please contact row5@aber.ac.uk (President). We also have a noticeboard with details of events which is located by the General Office in the Department Foyer.
We are also on Facebook: Aberystwyth University Criminology Society
Innocence Project
Aberystwyth University Innocence Project (AIP) is part of the Innocence Network UK whose aim is to educate to overturn and prevent the wrongful conviction of innocent people. The Innocence Project is just one example of the continuing importance placed on practical legal education within the Department of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth University. Law students involved in this project have hands on experience working on real criminal cases under the supervision of practising lawyers who orient them towards finding fresh evidence and arguments that demonstrate their client's factual innocence. Involvement in the Innocence Project effectively tackles one of the challenges that students face after graduation whereby practical experience is needed to get a job, yet a job is needed to get practical experience.
