Welcome to our International Students!

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth. The Department has developed many international links and collaborations in its 118 year history and the University currently welcomes students from over 120 different countries. Our international collaboration is an essential part of the Department's work.

This year the Department welcomes students from countries including Lithuania, India, Malaysia, Poland and Canada. I hope that all of you enjoy your experience at Aberystwyth and that you will take home with you many happy memories of your time in Wales. For many of you this will be your first visit to Aberystwyth and probably Wales and the United Kingdom. Although Aberystwyth is a small town, maybe much smaller than your home town or city, it is a lively and cosmopolitan community. I hope that for some of you, your family and friends will be able to visit you during your stay.

It is very pleasing to be able to welcome students transferring to Aberystwyth from our partner colleges in Malaysia. As you are probably aware, Aberystwyth has long established links with Malaysia. The first Malaysian student graduated from Aberystwyth in the 1950s. Since then, many of our alumni have achieved prominence in poicities and government, the legal profession, and the commercial sector. It is pleasing to see that this long tradition is being maintained and that our recruitement of Malaysian students is thriving. We have a lively Malaysian community here in Aberystwyth. In the class of 2009, four Malaysian students achieved first class honours in their finals, including the best student of the whole year.

I am looking forward to welcoming you in person to Aberystwyth and I hope that you will enjoy your time here and follow in the footsteps of our distinguished international alumni.
