Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Explain the conceptual framework of UK and continental European legal systems.
2. Explain the aims and objectives and practical effect of EU copyright directives.
3. Explain the extent to which EU directives have been implemented into UK law.
4 Give examples of the extent to which copyright law has evolved in the light of technological change.
5. Explain how owners¿ rights and users¿ rights are balanced in the public interest.

Brief description

Rationale:
This module will enable students to study the law of copyright in the EU. The module will increase the availability and opportunity for studying the subject for a range of potential students already in employment in relevant areas of business. It also covers an important area of Intellectual Property Law which has relevance beyond that specialist sector.

Brief Description:
This module looks at the different philosophies for protecting copyrights and the rights of copyright materials in sample EU member states; at successive EU directives on copyright law and the reasons for their enactment; and at the ways in which UK law has changed in response to those EU directives.

Communication Written communication is developed by the presentation of information and argument in written answers and in a more informal way by the use of Blackboard to encourage communication among students and between students and staff. Oral communication skills are developed at the residential study schools.
Improving own Learning and Performance Distance learning, by its very nature, requires strong individual learning and performance structures and this module further develops key skills in this area
Information Technology The module is delivered almost entirely by distance learning which relies heavily on the use of electronic information resources and on-line learning and teaching.
Personal Development and Career planning Independent learning enhances time management skills. Studying the module will also develop an enhanced capacity for critical thought and the ability to work independently.
Problem solving Students will be given practical legal problems to analyse and to advise clients as to their legal rights and responsibilities
Research skills Students will be expected to use legal databases and to read and analyse texts, articles and legal documents and EU and UK legislation
Subject Specific Skills This module provides students with the opportunity to identify, analyse, evaluate and practice a series of skills with respect to EU Copyright Law.
Team work Team working skills will be encouraged and developed in group activities and discussions at the residential study schools.
