Brief description

This module investigates the relationship between medical consumers and practitioners in terms of a medical marketplace as an approach to understanding the ways medical practices have been embedded in consumer culture during the early modern and modern periods. It will draw on a range of literature and a variety of examples, from both orthodox and heterodox medical practices and relationships, to suggest how looking at medicine from this perspective provides a useful corrective to the usual heroic narratives of medical progress. It will emphasize the multiplicity of competing models of medical practices and institutions throughout this period.

Aims

The module is an option module designed for use in the History of Medicine MA programme. It is intended to introduce students to the relevant literature on medical marketplaces and the evolving historical relationship between practitioners and patients in that field and give an overview of relevant themes and directions in the current practice of the history of medicine.
