Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module the student will have gained experience in written, oral and visual communication skills, in addition to information retrieval which will equip the graduate for the workplace.
Aims
The aim of this module is to develop communication skills and confidence in a relaxed, flexible, secure teaching environment.
Content
Various forms of scientific writing will be considered: (I) writing a thesis, (ii) writing a literature review, (iii) writing for targeted publication, (iv) poster presentation. In addition, students will become aware of the salient features in making a good oral presentation including use of audio-visual aids and planning/timing/rehearsing presentations.
The standard format of meetings will be discussed and will cover the roles adopted by the Chairperson and Minutes Secretary and the production of an agenda. Experience will be provided in 'interview techniques' with the emphasis on gathering information.
Students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in the above through role-playing exercise; this theme being an integral part of the development of team work projects. Attention will also be given to careers awareness, facilities and opportunities.
The module will be taught through the following media: (I) lectures, (ii) videos, (iii) seminars, (iv) group exercises. The form of assessment varies between Postgraduate degree schemes but will involve either a group word-processed report exemplifying skills acquired and/or a literature review on an agreed scientific topic.
