Discuss evidence for the effectiveness of play in developing emotional intelligence.

Demonstrate a range of play techniques to develop emotional intelligence.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of directive and non-directive approaches.

Reflect on their own preferred approaches and techniques.

Brief description

This course builds on the knowledge gained in Working with Play. It provides an introduction to the use of play and the creative arts to develop emotional intelligence in children and young people. The techniques used can help build self confidence and self esteem; improve concentration and the ability to work in groups; and increase the ability to deal with stress and anger.

Content

Lectures are based on the following topics:
1. A psychological understanding of emotions
2. Theoretical foundations of therapeutic play: Rogers, Axline
3. Directive approaches to play
4. Non-directive approaches to play
5. Evaluating the effectiveness of therapeutic play
6. Reflective practice
7. Play practice: Story and myth
8. Play practice: Drama, masks and puppetry
9. Play practice: Dance and movement
10. Play practice: Art and creativity

Seminars will be based on the following topics:
1. Understanding emotions
2. Approaches to play
3. Reflection
4. Theories into practice 1
5. Theories into practice 2
