Semester Assessment 2 x 2,500 word portfolios  Taken together, the two portfolios must include examples of all three genres (fiction, poetry and life-writing). Each portfolio of 2,500 words inclusive of a critical commentary of 500-1000 words.  Each portfolio to contain work in at least two of the genres studied.  100%
Supplementary Assessment Students who fail the module will be required to make good any missing elements and/or revise or replace any failed assignments.  100%

Learning Outcomes

On sucessful completion of this module, students should be able, within the parameters approprate to a wide-ranging introductory course, to:

1. demonstrate an understanding of some of the basic principles of writing in the following modes: short story, poetry, life-writing;

2. demonstrate an ability to deploy that understanding in the practical context of their own construction of creative work in these modes;

3. employ appropriate research as an integral part of their own creative work;

4. demonstrate, in evaluative prose, an awareness of their own writing processes;

5. demonstrate, by the revisionof work previously discussed in workshops, an ability to improve their writing in response to criticism.

Brief description

This is an introductory course, geared to the needs of students beginning their undergraduate creative writing studies. Students will be introduced to a number of literary genres (in the broad sense of the term) and will be given guidance in the application of their learning to their writing practice.

Research skills The research skills involved in preparing a piece of creative writing will be a focal point in weeks 7 and 8. In writing their evaluative commentaries, students are expected to report on research conducted
Subject Specific Skills Through exploration of the relationship between reading and writing, students will be encouraged to evaluate and edit their work
