It is intended to introduce students to key moments in modern German culture, i.e. defining moments which are considered by most commentators to have had a major influence on the development of German culture.

Brief description

This course will examine a range of cultural texts and artefacts in order to introduce students to the development of German culture and society between 1914 and the present day. Through the prism of literature, film and linguistics, students will explore the aftermath of the First World War, the rise and fall of the Weimar Republic, the Nazi period, the division of Germany, developments in the GDR and FRG as well as issues surrounding the unification of 1990. In doing so, students will gain not only a detailed knowledge of the politics and culture of the period, but also increase their competence as critical readers of culture.
