On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Interpret appropriate veterinary terminology
2. Identify and describe common diseases of companion animals
3. Discuss preventative control measures available for these diseases.
4. Discuss the principles of animal welfare relating to the conditions in which companion animals are kept and transported
The module will cover the meanings of veterinary terminology, the causes of disease, the indicators of illness in different species of companion animal, the methods of examination of individual sick animals, and methods of diagnosis of disease.
This module aims to develop students' knowledge and skills in basic aspects of companion animal health and welfare. Special emphasis will be given to the principles of epidemiology of common systemic diseases in the individual animal. Animal welfare guidelines along with the recommendations for the care of sick and injured animals and management of wounds will be discussed. Zoonoses will also be considered. Veterinary terminology related to all these areas will be covered in depth. The principal species of study will be the dog, cat, rodents and some avian species, though other exotic species will also be considered in less detail.
