On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Identify and define veterinary terminology
2. Discuss the difference between sick and healthy animals on the basis of behavioural changes and basic diagnostic parameters.
3. Describe common systemic diseases of domestic livestock and horses
4. Discuss preventative control measures available for these diseases.
This module will cover the meanings of veterinary terminology, the causes of disease, the indicators of illness in different domesticated species, the methods of examination of individual sick animals as well as herds/flocks, and an introduction to the methods of diagnosis of disease.
This module will concentrate on the principles of veterinary science for livestock and horses. The aim is to develop students' knowledge and skills in basic aspects of domesticated animal health and welfare. Special emphasis will be given to the principles of epidemiology of common systemic diseases in these species. Current animal welfare guidelines along with the recommendations for the care of sick and injured animals and management of minor wounds will be discussed. Zoonoses and notifiable diseases will also be considered. Veterinary terminology related to all these areas will be covered in depth.
