Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should have a knowledge of the particular nature of Italian, a language in which the centripetal evolution is continually corroded by the dialect substratum;

  • have an insight into some of the complexities of the history of the Italian language;
  • learn a new concept of 'dialect': a language which is subject to the national language, and not a simple variant of it;
  • realise the sociolinguistic consequences of the unceasing intersection of dialects and national language;
  • recognise the main features of Italian dialects.

Brief description

The course enables students to be aware that 'Italian' is far from being a unified and homogeneous language; it also provides students who want to specialise in Italian with an instrument to acquire competence in relevant aspects of Italian linguistics, drawing attention to the particular position of Italian in the linguistic history of Europe.
