Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
identify and comprehend the risks involved in conducting research on human participants and compile a risk assessment.
Understand the ethical issues and procedures involved when conducting research on human subjects and demonstrate the ability to produce and review ethical applications.
Generate a budget plan for full economic costs of a research project.
Demonstrate an understanding of research grant capture and proposal writing.
Aims
To work in exercise and health research, students need a range of highly developed generic professional skills and knowledge to ensure that they are able to design, develop and implement research projects satisfactorily. This module will give students the experience of developing and applying such skills and knowledge used within research settings, and forms a key component in achieving the programme aim of developing autonomous, self-reflective research practitioners capable of developing ethical, safe, and professional project designs. Furthermore, this module will enable students to submit potentially fundable research grant applications to attempt to gain funding for research projects post MSc completion. The content will be based on the student’s proposed dissertation, and will form the essential preparatory work for said module.
Brief description
The module forms part of the core structure of the MSc in Exercise and Health Research. This module will provide opportunities for students to develop and apply the generic research processes that are necessary for research to be conducted. Students will undertake the process of developing an initial proposal/method to the stage where the research could be conducted. The development of a portfolio will include the key documents needed to be able to complete research, and thus this module will teach and develop these key skills needed for pursuing a career in research or applied contexts. In addition, students will engage in workshop sessions, led by Department staff to (a) help develop critical thinking, and (b) consider ethical, professional, and health and safety issues that have arisen during their dissertation proposal via peer review.

The topics may be discipline-specific (e.g., physiology, psychology or biomechanics) but need not be so, based on individual student preferences. However, the research question itself must be of relevance to Exercise and Health.
