Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate technical competency in a range of laboratory techniques.

Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of technical aspects within the exercise and health sciences.

Demonstrate employment relevant, transferable and professional skills.

Aims

When examining the relationship between physical activity and health researchers need to employ a range of techniques and be aware of data quality issues such as accuracy and precision of measurement. The principle aim of the module is for students to develop their practical skill when using a range of equipment routinely used within the exercise and health sciences.

Brief description

This module will provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills within the laboratory environment. In addition to furthering their understanding of the importance of correct calibration and maintenance of equipment, students will develop their inter-personal skills and study best practice for record keeping. The module will equip students with the practical skills and competencies necessary to conduct research which examines human movement and physical activity while addressing issues such as reliability and validity.

Content

Indicative content includes:

Practical skills in a range of laboratory techniques
Calibration issues for a range of laboratory equipment and techniques

Biomedical signal acquisition and processing

Inter-personal skills when conducting research involving human beings including issues relating to consent
