Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

FRM1810 is designed for Master's or doctoral students with some prior knowledge of French (normally A-level or equivalent). Learners will improve their competence in writing, speaking, reading and listening and will also become familiar with a wide range of aspects of French culture. In addition, they will be introduced to the specialist skills required for translating a range of keywords relating to French history into English.

Brief description

This module forms part of the research skills programme for PhD students in History and is suitable for students with some prior knowledge of French. It aims to introduce students to contemporary French, imparting basic competence in all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and developing the student's language awareness as part of his/her generic language learning skills.


All classes will be devoted to the integrated study of the French language in its cultural context. One weekly hour and one fortnightly hour are devoted to the systematic teaching of grammar, and in the other hours (2 per week) students will be in small groups and will do a range of listening/writing/oral/aural exercises to consolidate the skills acquired in the larger classes. Exercises will be set regularly. Marks for these - and for occasional tests in class - will constitute the mark for the course.

Problem solving Students need to learn to use reference works (e.g. grammars, dictionaries) efficiently and accurately; they also have to develop strategies for translating texts when some vocabulary items are unfamiliar and no reference works are available.
