Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

*Distinguish between different types of business information service, contextualising these services relative to information service more generally

  • Identify and critically analyse the information needs of businesses

*Identify appropriate systematic search strategy, perform complex searches upon key business information sources and evaluate output.

*Evaluate the scope and accessibility of business information sources, including a comparison of free versus subscription

* Identify methods and tools for providing evidence of the value of the business information service

Brief description

The aim of this module is to give students an introduction to the field of Business Information. The module provides an overview of the types of business information sources and examines the information needs of business. Students will develop professional skills required in the business information workplace. They will also explore different business information workplace scenarios through case studies and professional literature. It will enable students to determine if they wish to specialize in the Business Information field when they enter the profession.

Content

Content will include the following:
  • Information needs of business
  • Use and evaluation of business information sources such as news, market research
  • Profiles of diverse business information services e.g. business school, public library business information service, law library, business support services
  • Professional practice: proving the value of a business information service
