Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Identify ways of improving personal learning

Demonstrate an effective note taking style

Write an essay using an appropriate layout and accurate referencing

Give a short verbal presentation

Brief description

This course will introduce a range of skills, from writing essays to time management, from finding the right information to contributing to a class discussion. By learning appropriate techniques and methods, other modules will be easier to approach with confidence.

Content

Lectures will be based on the following:
1. Reflecting on your own learning
2. Academic writing, including essays, short submissions and projects
3. What is a theory?
4. Referencing and plagiarism
5. Reading skills for academic work
6. Using the internet for information
7. Effective note taking
8. Time management and preparing for assignments
9. Preparing for and giving verbal presentations
10. Preparing for examinations

Seminars will be based on the following:
1. Types of academic writing
2. Referencing
3. Effective reading
4. Oral presentations
5. Examination preparation
